20.dec.2002 - Julie Kahn’s party at Slak, and the snubbing of Herb and Kitty

The music was too loud and the room was too dark to trade her brilliantly done cards, which was the idea, but it was a great party. I’m just sorry that she couldn’t be there - she fell ill, I’m told.

David Rohn told me how he, in character as Herb and Kitty Katzenjammer, was thrown out of Art Basel, ostensibly for hawking. (What were the exhibitors doing, exactly?) This confirms one of my suspicions about Basel - that the sheer overbearing professionalism of the thing was not a good environment to promote real inspiration. Throwing David Rohn out of Art Basel was like throwing St. Francis out of the Vatican. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Slak is a hangout for really good hip hop dancers. In visual art, you can get away with value-neutrality on the premise that everything is about the expression of its own viewpoint on its own terms. But pull that kind of relativistic hooey on this guy, and you’re going to get your ass kicked on the dance floor. Hip hop is a meritocracy ruled by the skilled. I say we adopt the hip hop model.
